Kent station-eating

Installation:

The reason for me to choose staircase as my installation is that it’s the same for my one way road bus station. The concept of the installation is sightline, I use different bars to represent the sight that from different types of people, and they all facing one direction. For each of the bars, I reflect one quality that can be used in architecture. Like the shadow, lights, rhythm, connection, reversed color.

Pavilion:

The pavilion is located on the water pool besides to the kent bus station. The hobo comes to the pavilion several times a day for eating, so the interesting site choice can avoid him to get bored. The general shape of the pavilion is triangle. It is divided into three different spaces, which can be defined by open space, semi-open space, and the private space. For the open one, I use the columns as the exterior wall, so people can see inside, and the hobo can see outside, this offer a chance for him to interact with the strangers. For the semi- open one, its still open, however, it is located at the back side of the pavilion. Compare to the open one facing at the street, this one is much private, because there are not people at the back side at the pavilion. For the private space, I decide to build it inside of the pavilion, its all surround by walls, so it can protect him from the poor weather and offering him a quiet, isolated space. Every day, when he comes to the pavilion, depends on his mood, he can choose that kind atmosphere he wants to have when he is eating. Last but not least, in the middle part of this structure, both of the ceiling and floor are made by glass, and when the pool is fountaining, the water goes on the ceiling, and following the concrete wall, eventually drains out of the pavilion, this can create a feeling that people were in the water.

collage elevation and site plan:

As we all know, eating plays an very important role in our daily lives. It is necessary to have three meals a day to keep our health in a good standard, homeless person are also likewise.

Because of this, I think the homeless guy should come to my site three times a day, even though it depends on whether he gets the food or not, I still think the frequency for him to appear at kent station should be very often. Kent is a very busy station, so during the time when he is eating, it is interesting for him to see the behaviors made by various people. Also, I think this process dose not have to take too long, 30 minutes it’s enough for him to get his meal done. (because he does not order things and he already gets his food) For one day, he probably spends around an hour and a half to finish his three meals at kent. For the choice of the location, I will use the water pool which beside the kent station to build the eating space for him.

  1. Nice work Jason.

    1. I like the reinforcement of the direction of traffic and the direction people on the site stand. However, you might want to reorganize it slightly so that it doesn’t look like they are about to get hit by the cars. I think it is important to emphasize that they all stand on the same side of the street.

    2. Think about whether or not you want the trees on the site plan to be green. They draw a lot of attention even though they are not a focus of your site investigation. Either integrate more colours to the other elements on the site or make it all black and white.

    3. Make sure the lines of the Transitway remain visible. They are currently getting cut off or hidden under other layers. They do not need to be solid black or grey lines but they need to be visible to see the connection to the other students’ sites in the end.

  2. Maybe he goes to “eat” even if he doesn’t have food. There is more to eating than just food!!

Perhaps sometimes he cannot get food. Would he still want to go to Kent and to your pavilion if he doesn’t have food? Think about everything involved with eating other than just the food. There could be some other important elements you might want to introduce into the program of the site.

Also think about whether or not “3 meals per day” is how a homeless person would eat. Does he ever sit down for a full meal or does he prefer a series of short snacks?
