Copywork drop-off

You can leave your copywork in my mailbox in the main office.

Inspiration move

I’m (slowly) migrating all the inspiration posts to a new page:

http://studioideas.wordpress.com/

I think it was very successful and I plan to continue it with my next studios.  Thanks for being the guinea pigs.

Post crit and copywork

Well done everyone. I know some of you felt that the crits pointed out a lot of things you didn’t have time to do. Don’t worry about that. Crits aren’t meant to tell you what you should have done. They are a response to the work you present and a discussion of the ideas that are generated.

Trust me.  You will always wish you had had an extra two weeks.

I am happy to arrange one on one meetings with anyone who wants to discuss their crit or any other part of the term. I can come in Friday late afternoon and Tuesday morning. Send me a message so I can schedule the time.

Copywork is due Tuesday December 22 at noon. You need:

– finalize your webpages (house and transitway station): they should include a description of the project (200 to 300 words); images of all required photos, drawings and models; images of any other process work you wish to include

– CD with 20 high resolution photos or 20 slides of your work for the semester. You must submit 20 and only 20.  Pick the images you think best describe your work across the whole semester.

UPDATE the CD can be handed in the first week of January if you are leaving town early but I recommend getting it done sooner rather than later. The website must be finished before I submit your grades.

Lock-up check in

I stopped by studio and took a look at everyone’s work.

Sleep well and see you tomorrow night at Mexicali Rosa’s.

Update

I’ve checked the work you’ve done which will be what is considered during grading.  You are, of course welcome to continue working on anything you want to improve for your own sense of completion of the project.

I’ve had a couple of people ask and I would hate to discourage the desire to see projects through as learning opportunities beyond just their grade-value.  You’ve worked hard and feel invested in your project.  That’s a good thing.

Dec 14 – Final crit

Morning session 9:00 – 1:00, Rm. 435

I will work out the order but everyone needs to be there at 9:00 to set up the system map with the collages.

Design Process Documentation

I found this video on one of the sites I check daily – I thought their method of documenting their process was really well done, and this thing is really cool! Check it out!

Remember grabbing handfuls of maple tree “helicopters” as a kid, throwing them up into the air and watching them spiral back down to earth? A group of students at the University of Maryland’s Clark School of Engineering drew on those memories to create the world’s smallest controllable single-winged aircraft. They were faced by challenges, such as how to keep the tiny aircraft from being knocked off course by a strong gust of wind, but their project created the first known successful artificial samara.

Tiny robotic flying vehicles like this could be used to investigate unsafe or inaccessible areas, such as those present in military or rescue operations. The robotic samara uses the same sort of spiral rotation as the natural samara, but it also contains a stabilizing factor and a propulsion factor that allow it to be controlled remotely and to hover in the air. It can be dropped from a high altitude and controlled during descent, but it can also take off from the ground.

Using inspiration gained from nature along with innovative engineering, the UMCP group may have created a vehicle that vastly improves the way surveillance, fire monitoring, rescue missions and other life-saving missions are carried out. Their invention has undergone several makeovers since it first came to life, and no doubt the team will continue to refine it in the future.

End of term 2nd year dinner

Tradition has it that 2nd years have an end of term dinner at Mexicali Rosa’s at the Dow’s Lake Pavilion.

Manuel has asked me to let you know that it will be Friday December 11 @ 7p.m.

About buses

Used almost exclusively on public transport bus services, articulated buses are approximately 18 metres (60 ft) in length, compared to standard rigid buses which are usually 11 to 14 metres (36 to 46 ft) long.

Installation take down

Ok, word has finally made it my way.

We’ve been asked to take down the installations.  Please do so as soon as possible and clean up any related mess.

Thanks.

Casa di Giulietta (from Wikipedia)

In Verona, Italy, a house claiming to be the Capulets’ has been turned into a tourist attraction. It features the balcony, lovely architecture, and in the small courtyard, a bronze statue of Juliet baring her breast. It is one of the most visited sites in the town. Legend is that if a person strokes the breast of the statue, that person will have good fortune.

Many people write their names and the names of their beloved ones on the walls of the entrance. That wall is known as Juliet’s wall and because of big note number, writing is restricted on just one part of a wall. Many believe that writing on that place will make their love everlasting. Unfortunately writing on Juliet’s Wall will be stopped because of protection of historical importance of that place.
