-The Gatherer-

At Late afternoon, after lunch, our hobo arrives at Hurdman station in time for the rush of people on their way home from work.  Our nomadic hobo travels station to station always collecting transfers to get to other stations. Timing is critical because this is one of the two times during the day that the traffic through Hurdman station is at its peak which provides our hobo with limitless opportunities.  For convenience sake, we will call our hobo The Gatherer, because that is what he does. He gathers what he needs. You could say that it is his survival strategy or his source of income. He collects what he needs for the day, food, ingredients, transfers, stories, memories … what he collects solely depends on the type of people he meets, and what he acquires from them. Interaction with people is vital with The Gatherers hunt for possessions. Once he spots a victim, he allures the victim in with conversation, allowing the victim to assume that he is companionable.  Many people are susceptible to his strategy and once he has acquired what he can, and the volume of people is slowly dying down, he gathers his newly acquired possessions and travels to the next station.

-Pavillion-

When The Gatherer arrives at Hurdman station, he gets there at noon in time for the late rush hour. The increased traffic into the station makes it ideal for collecting. He takes advantage of the fact that several bus routes which run through Ottawa stop at this one station. The Gatherer now has a place to call his own. A place where he can control the flow of people, in and out of his space. He collects what he needs and what people give him therefore he needs to take advantage of the nature of Hurdman station. The number of people who flow  into the station gives the opportunity for gathering possessions. These include food and its ingredients, transfers, and by  meeting people he is also able to get many stories and memories. He has positioned himself in the center of the station, where the most amount of people pass through. In this area people are usually standing, waiting for the bus, passing through, or looking at the bus schedule, providing the  Gatherer with many potential victims. The Pavillion provides him with control of  the area which he inhabbits. He is able to control his working environment.

The moving glass panels allow him to control the amount of people who enter his space. Enclosing them in his area, however,at the same time, because the panels are glass they create the illusion that there are no walls. Once the desired number of people have been trapped, he then acquires what he needs from them by alluring his victim through conversation. Many people are susceptible to his strategy, and at the end of the day, when the traffic dies down, The Gatherer moves on to store his newly acquired possessions.

  1. That’s interesting, you make it sound like the gatherer is a predetor and the people are his prey.

  2. Are people the prey or are the things they can give?

He is hunting for food, transfers, stories, memories… not people.

Could you post the list of words you told me in studio from when you were researching “gathering”.

What are other ways to gather other than hunting? Interesting if you consider that Bill’s station is the garden. That he collects through harvesting, maybe?

It’s curious that you chose the word “needs” to describe the things he collects. What makes stories and memories necessary?

How can he set a better trap?
